I’m sure you’ve all been dying to know how else you can get happier at work, right? Right?! Well, we’re going to tell you anyway, so you better be ready to smile…

1. Lists!

Make a schedule, a list, a to-do – whatever you prefer – that’ll get you in gear for the day. There’s nothing more helpful than a list of things to do – and when you’re going to do them – you’ll not only stay on task but you’ll know your tasks!

2. Take Pride in Your Work!

No matter what you do, whether it’s clinching a sale or making the best tea, be proud of it! Self-confidence breeds happiness so never take yourself for granted, your awesome at what you do – so own it!

3. Persevere!

If you’ve been a bit mopey, depressed or even unprofessional up to now, it’s going to be hard to change in just one day! But keep at it and remember, it’s not a new you, it’s an improved you!

As it’s sunny now, we’re definitely going to keep on with the happy theme for at least a little while longer as the good weather brings out the best in all of us! Let us know in the comments if there’s anything you want us to focus on in particular and we’ll be back next week to spread more sunshine.

Doom and gloom always strikes on a Monday morning but here’s our tips on how to get out of the slump:

1. Wake up Early!

There’s nothing worse than JUST making it to work on time and being flustered (and sometimes not wearing matching shoes!) It just sets you up for a bad day, especially if you’re late. So get your outfit set out the night before, get that alarm clock set and give yourself time to eat a good breakfast and commute without all the stress of being on time!

2. Smile!

There’s truth in the words: “Smile and the whole world smiles with you” Almost everyone you smile at, from the barista on your morning coffee run to the person who offers you the seat they had their eye on, will smile back, causing you to smile again too! The smile chain will continue all day, guaranteed!

3. Dress Up!

Dress for success has never been more true than when you’re at work. If you dress up in a way that makes you feel both comfortable and powerful, then you’re ready to go for the day and the self-confidence will be oozing out of you! So take that gorgeous power outfit out of the back of the wardrobe and get going!

Stay tuned for next week where we give you even more tips! But for now, leave us some of your tricks in the comments and stay smiley!

Let’s face it, being at work everyday isn’t a walk in the park but it can be just that little bit less stressful by following Get the Milk’s 5 simple rules on how to destress your office life!

1. Listen to Relaxing Music

If you work allows you to use headphones, then get a playlist together as soon as possible! Be it classical music, love songs or even whale sounds, learn what music makes you feel calm and listen to as much as you can – it’ll hopefully drown out that photocopier! Of course, if headphones are a no-no then even listening for a half hour during lunch can work wonders for your mental wellbeing.

2. Get Smelling

Another case of adhering to the office rules – if candles are allowed then get burning and try scents like vanilla and lavender. However, in the very likely case that your office doesn’t allow a naked flame, then get your hands on an expensive reed diffuser, plug-in air freshener or gel freshener because sniffing up those fragrances is bound to relax you today.

3. Take a Break

Lunch doesn’t have to be your only break. Take five minutes at least once a day just to switch off your monitor, disable your instant messenger and silence your phone – be alone with your thoughts and stay silent for a just a few minutes. Spending even a little time without any of your tech will be like meditation for the modern age.

4. Tidy Up

A cluttered desk is a cluttered mind! Clean up and reorganise your desk and surrounding areas – not only will it help you stay focused and more productive at work but it’ll keep you calm.

5. Get Comfortable

You need to be both comfortable in mind and body to truly relax so as for body, get yourself a comfy chair with lumbar support/a pillow and an ergonomic keyboard and you’ll be feeling comfy in no time! As for your mind, you’re only truly comfortable in familar surroundings, so get vases of flowers, personal photographs and your favourite trinkets and adorn your desk with them!

Let us know in the comments if any of these tips helped you to relax at work or you can even leave your own, we all need them!

There’s nothing worse than sticking to your diet (well done, you!), stocking up on fruit as a snack for work then most, if not all of it, going off within a couple of days. Keeping your fruit properly can help it stay fresh and edible for longer – leading to not only less food wasted but less money too! Read on for our easy tips on how to keep fruit fresh…

As soon as any fruit you’ve stored outside of the fridge is ripe, make sure you refrigerate it to keep it from perishing so quickly!

Handle soft fruits like berries and bananas with care to avoid bruising. When transporting them from the supermarket to work try blowing up the plastic bags the fruit came in with your breath to provide a protective cushion.

Don’t put bananas in the fridge! They will go black!

Store your refrigerated fruit in a separate compartment from any vegetables as the ethylene fruit gives off can quickly spoil your veg.

Be sure to clean out your fruit bowl and fridge fruit drawer regularly to ensure no mould or overripe fruit is still present to ruin the fresh stuff!

One bad apple really does spoil the bunch – make sure to remove overripe or spoiled fruit straight away or it’ll turn the rest quicker than you’d think.

Lemons and limes absorb odours from produce around them, so avoid storing them in the fridge unless you want them smelling/tasting like your colleagues tuna salad!

Let us know in the comments if these tips helped you with storing your fruit or tell us your tips!

There’s nothing better than getting a long weekend off of work, especially one where you’re actively encouraged to gorge on chocolate!
Handful of cherry tomatoes

Diet-branded e.g. Weight Watchers treat

Thursday

Large bowl of low-fat vegetable soup with 1 or 2 wholegrain Ryvitas

Punnet of berries

Having a long commute can lead not just to stress but also weight gain and bad health thanks to sitting down for so long! It’s okay to balance it out with a trip to the gym or a jog but if you’re a hard worker, it’s hard to find time to get the much needed exercise in – so do it the easy way and workout on the way to and from work! Here’s Get the Milk’s five ways to workout during your commute.

Stand Up

You’re going to be sat down for the next 8 hours anyway, so why do you need to spend your commute doing the same? If you’re using public transport, give up your seat to someone who wants it more and spend your time balancing and bracing – it’ll work out your legs, tum, and bum!

Get Out Early

Add some more walking to your commute by parking your car further away or getting off the bus or train a stop earlier – even if it’s just for 5 minutes, it’s still exercise and the fresh air while help to de-stress you.

Good Posture

In last week’s post we showed you the importance of good posture in the office and the skills most definitely transfer to getting yourself to and from work! Whether your walking, driving or standing up on the bus, make sure your posture is perfect to avoid any back injuries or unwanted stress.

Eat Smart on the Go

Most of us rush out of the house with breakfast being the last thing on our mind. However, before you reach for that greasy breakfast muffin, make a healthier choice and choose something like granola, yogurt, porridge or wholemeal bagels – all items which are available to buy on London public transport – trust us, we’ checked! Or, if you’re even more health smart, you can even prepare your own healthy breakfast the night before to take with you on your commute – done and done.

Focus on Breathing

It may sound like the easiest thing to do but breathing right can help de-stress you before a hard day at the office. Slow your breathing, inhaling through the nose and exhaling out the mouth and gradually increasing your exhalation time. Concentrating on breathing means you’re not concentrating on the things that stress you out – just don’t miss your stop!

Let us know in the comments if any of these tips helped make your commute healthier!

The afternoon slump hits everyone, no matter which office you work in. People regularly combat it in the unhealthiest of ways – with sugary snacks and energy drinks, giving you a buzz for an hour or so then leaving you crashed out. Having no energy at work makes you distracted, unproductive and pushes the rest of your evening right off track. Here’s Get the Milk’s tips on how to stay on track in the office without resorting to sugar or chemicals!

Stay hydrated

Nothing keeps your energy levels higher than making sure your thirst is quenched – and not by caffiene or sugar. As long as you keep a big bottle of water nearby and drink often, you’ll be more alert without the potential for an energy crash.

Eat wisely (and often!)

Rather than just waiting for a big, carbohydrate-filled meal at lunch – which normally is the cause of the afternoon slump – eat little and often. Keep high-energy snacks such as dried/fresh fruits, nuts, oatcakes or any of the snacks we mentioned last week on your desk, ready to enjoy at regular intervals.

Take a Walk

If it’s just a stroll to the copier or a quick trip to the corner shop, getting up from your desk will get the blood flowing and get you working at full capacity again.

Don’t Skip Breakfast

No matter what happens in the morning, make time for breakfast. It gets your metabolism going and will stop you from filling up on starchy foods at lunch that will cause your afternoon slump.

Take a Power Nap
